VISIT CAVE:
The 4×4 jeep adventure that will take you to discover the three most famous marble quarrying basins in the world – Colonnata, Miseglia and Torano – begins from the moment you board the 8-passenger Land Rover Defender: the meeting point it is in the central square of the town of Colonnata. The first stop is in Fossa Cava to visit a Roman marble quarry dating back to the 1st century BC. C. The archaeological site is perfectly preserved and can be explored in its entirety through a series of wooden bridges and runners. The rock extraction plans and the signs of the ancient excavation techniques are still clearly visible. After a few stops to take souvenir photographs, we get back on the jeep in the direction of the highest reservoirs. Within a few minutes – passing on the same winding and very steep roads that hundreds of trucks carrying the gigantic blocks of marble travel along every day – we reach the valley of Miseglia, improperly called Fantiscritti. The view that can be enjoyed from this position over the valley below is incomparable. In fact, it is possible to admire the famous bridges of Vara – which are part of the ancient marble railway system – but also the road that winds like a snake up to the top of the mountain and which was recently paved during the film production of 007 – Quantum of Solace, who shot their famous car chase scene right here. The tour then ends with a visit to the Torano basin and Michelangelo’s quarry, where the great sculptor chose the blocks from which he would “excavate” his works.
